A selected number of organizations publish annually league tables in ranking universities using vastly differing criteria. There are global and country based rankings made available on the web free of charge. These rankings can be a sensitive area to many Universities as the standing and profile of their establishments are affected in the national and global market place.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings and the Academic Ranking of World Universities are regarded as the three most influential global university rankings. The top ten ranking slots of the three most influential University League tables have been consistently shared between American and English Universities with the former dominating the top end of the list. There are criticisms that these global rankings in some way have inbuilt favorable weightings providing an advantage to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics ( STEM ) based large multi-faculty Universities in securing a relatively superior ranking
1.0 Times Higher Education World University Rankings
The British publisher, Times Higher Education (THE) in association with Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), published the annual Times Higher Education–QS World University Rankings from 2004 to 2009. THE, breaking away from QS, joined Thomson Reuters in 2009 to provide a new set of world university rankings, called Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The new methodology employ 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators for reliance by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments. The world class universities are judged across all of their core missions, teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook

2.0 QS World University Rankings
British Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) publishes annually University rankings under its own identity after the Times Higher Education ( THE ) terminated its association in 2010. The widely read university comparison provides for an interactive comparison of the ranking of universities in a specific region, by subject area, or based on factors such as reputation or research citations. QS uses a survey of academics, the number of citations, graduate employment rates, student-faculty ratios and the number of international students to build its rankings. The QS rankings comprise both world and regional league tables using essentially the methodology previouslt used during their association with the THE. QS applies independent and different criteria and weightings in its methodology for world and national rankings which means that the assessments made for a University on the global ranking could well differ from the national ranking for the same University

3.0 Academic Ranking of World Universities,
The Chinese government funded the compilation initially to measure the gap between Chinese and “world class” Universities. The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) is now compiled by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University but maintained by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy providing annual global rankings of Universities since 2003. ARWU rankings have been praised for being “consistent and transparent”. ARWU does not rely on surveys and school submissions

4.0 Webometrics Ranking Web of Universities
The Webometrics ( Ranking Web ) is a Spanish based researcher engaged in Ranking of Higher Education Institutions. It is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas ( Spanish National Research Council, CSIC ), the largest public research body in Spain. Since 2004, Cybermetrics Lab has been carrying out an open, independent and scientific exercise every six months for providing reliable, multidimensional, updated and useful information about the performance of Universities from all over the world. CSIC consisted of 126 centers and institutes distributed throughout Spain in 2006. The degree of variance in the results of different Ranking organizations is clearly evident from the Webometrics World Ranking as all of the first ten top slots are none but American Universities and highest ranking for a non American University is at fifteen for the University of Toronto whilst Oxford and Cambridge Universities of England ranked at seventeen and eighteen respectively

2.0 The Guardian University league table
The Guardian ranks UK Universities using eight different criteria, each weighted between 5 and 17 per cent. Unlike other annual rankings of British Universities, the criteria do not include a measure of research output. A “value-added” factor is included which compares students’ degree results with their entry qualifications based upon a sophisticated indexing methodology that tracks students from enrolment to graduation and qualifications upon entry are compared with the award that a student receives at the end of their studies
